My name is Deborah Schwanke. I am the owner of Soaring Spirit Shih Tzu. I live in Colorado Springs, CO. I have been showing Shih Tzu for 14 years and have been breeding since 2005. I enjoy showing my Shih Tzu as an owner/handler. I maintain a small number of dogs so they will get all of the time and attention they deserve. My goal is to breed the best quality Shih Tzu puppy I can for both structure and temperament.
At Soaring Spirit Shih Tzu great care in producing top quality Shih Tzu which will not only shine in the show ring, but will also be healthy, loving pets and companions.
All Shih Tzu puppy breedings are planned well in advance and I breed according to the AKC Standard for the Shih Tzu and adhere to the American Shih Tzu Club code of ethics. I belong to the American Shih Tzu Club, the Colorado Springs Kennel Club and the Metro Mile High Toy Club.
The Shih Tzu was always a special companion for people. The breed originated in Tibet. Like their other Tibetan breed counterparts, the Shih Tzu was, in part, bed warmer, entertainer, and companion for the Dalai Lama monks who bred them. In time, Shih Tzu became treasured palace pets of the Empress of China. They were bred extensively by palace eunuchs. It has been noted that the Empress highly valued the Shih Tzu who were most devoted to her. The other more fickle ones she gave away as gifts! Several Shih Tzu found their way to the Western world as gifts. These dogs were the foundation of the breed in England and Scandinavia. Later, Shih Tzu fund their way to America. In 1969, Shih Tzu were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. In the United States, the Shih Tzu is part of the Toy dog group. This is different than in any other country.
The Shih Tzu has become tremendously popular for his affectionate good nature and charm. He is small, smart, sturdy and adaptable.
The primary function of the Shih Tzu today is exactly what is was at the time the breed originated, that is to be a wonderful little companion for people. This sociable and intelligent little dog is eager to please, although some may be prone to stubbornness. He is still the clown and entertainer. He may be a spirited show dog or a laid back lap lover. The Shih Tzu is a companion dog par excellence!
